Diego Maradona is to be the subject of a global documentary on his time at Napoli – in the style of 'The Last Dance' Netflix series on basketball great Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

The show, partly devised by current Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, will cover Maradona's seven years in the southern Italian city, when he was adored by supporters for delivering the only two Serie A titles in their history.

Maradona died last November aged 60 and remains a virtual deity in Naples, where there are shrines around the city in his honour.

'We are about to produce a TV series lasting 10 hours to go around the world on the golden years of Maradona at Napoli, from 1984 to 1991,' De Laurentiis told Sportsmail.

'We changed the name of our ground, which was once called San Paolo but is now the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

'Neapolitans have created places of worship around the city in honour of Maradona, with candles, flowers and images. He is a mythical figure.'

The Argentine's stint in Naples has already been chronicled by Asif Kapadia, who produced similar films about Formula One driver Ayrton Senna and singer Amy Winehouse, in the 2019 film 'Diego Maradona'.

Kapadia created all three using archive footage, while a Maradona biopic – 'Blessed Dream' – is set for release on Amazon later this year.

De Laurentiis' programme, meanwhile, relies on interviews with former team-mates and associates.
