Dyche bemused by Forest defending in defeat to Leeds

Sean Dyche was left "scratching his head" at Nottingham Forest's defending during their 3-1 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road.

Despite a debut goal from Lorenzo Lucca late on, Forest were down and out by that point after earlier strikes from Jayden Bogle, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Lucca became the 10th player to score on his Premier League debut for Forest, also being the 12th Italian to do so overall in the competition, but it was their problems at the other end that proved costly.

Bogle made the most of miscommunication between the Forest defence from a long ball, Okafor was able to tap in from close range, while Calvert-Lewin scored with his chest in the second half.

Forest have now lost two of their last three Premier League games against newly promoted opponents (W1), more than their previous 15 such games since their promotion in 2022 (W8 D6 L1).

Dyche was quick to praise Leeds for their performance, but was left bemused by the way in which Forest conceded.

Dyche told BBC Match of the Day: "Three awful goals, you can't give away goals like that at this level.

"Credit to them, they deserved it. We warned the players, we know the atmosphere in here and all the talk of it.

"We started playing well, we made two chances, but you can't get done with a straight ball over the top with your unit all staring at the ball. Then we give away a second that's not great.

"I actually thought we were still in it at that point. Then the third goal and you're just scratching your head because they're miles off what we usually do as a unit.

"To concede the first, they drive you mad those ones. They're the basic principles. We tried to play offside for no reason, I don't like that anyway.

"Then they score a goal out of a nothing situation. Then the third is a real headscratcher. The whole place changes and we had a couple of chances in the second half as well."

Forest remain six points above the relegation zone, though 18th place West Ham face 19th place Burnley on Saturday.
