EPL predictions revisited as Arsenal come good and Man Utd have shocker

  /  autty

Another Premier League season has drawn to an end with Manchester City winning the title yet again and the three promoted teams going straight back down to the Championship.

Arsenal proved to be the closest challenger to Pep Guardiola's machine, while Manchester United had the most disappointing campaign of all and Chelsea looked a shambles for long spells before getting it together

At the beginning of the season Mirror Football predicted the finishing places for all 20 sides. And while the top two were correct, there were a couple badly wrong.

Here is how they ended up, what we said last summer and some reminders of how much has changed.

Prediction: 1st

What we said: The only way they do not win the title again is if an injury crisis or off-field drama takes hold.

How they performed : It went down to the wire but Pep Guardiola ’s team are now the first team to win four league titles in a row. What is left to say about their on-field dominance?

Prediction: 2nd

What we said:Mikel Arteta ’s team should again be the best of the rest. The young core, fitness permitting, should make further improvements.

How they performed: Deserve huge credit for running City so close and there could be no doubts over their mental fortitude. The question now is how can they take the final step. A new centre-forward would help.

Prediction: 4th

What we said: The likes of Mo Salah should be kept off the Europa League treadmill but a Champions League return looks likely.

How they performed: Campaign will be defined by Jurgen Klopp ’s bombshell departure announcement. It is easy now to forget talk of a quadruple building up in late winter but they did achieve a Champions League return with ease.

Prediction: 7th

What we said:Unai Emery won over many of his detractors last season, proving that the flat spell in charge of Arsenal was a blip in a lengthy successful career as an elite head coach. Now he must push on … but the key to their success is Ollie Watkins picking up where he left off.

How they performed: Watkins has been outstanding for a team surpassing all expectations as they return to Europe’s top competition. Only disappointment was falling short in the Conference League.

Prediction: 8th

What we said: It is hard to envision a situation where they can return to the Champions League. Ange Postecoglou, undoubtedly a clever manager, may find it is the tallest of orders.

How they performed: Started the season well only for form to tail off. Questions remain over whether Postecoglou’s gung-ho style can bring success at this level, while he admits the club is not yet at Champions League level.

Prediction: 5th

What we said: Reading between the lines of Mauricio Pochettino ’s comments suggests there is already some frustration about the club’s chaotic approach to, well, everything.

How they performed: It has been chaotic and a young, inexperienced squad has often been propped up by Cole Palmer’s brilliance. But a strong finish makes it a no-brainer to keep Pochettino.

Prediction: 6th

What we said: While their owners throw billions at their Saudi Pro League, there has not been significant spending on Tyneside. And that will be a source of quiet frustration for Eddie Howe as he looks to combine a decent return to the Champions League with another top-four push.

How they performed: Injury problems are a reasonable excuse but more was expected and this looks a clear case of slowed progress for the world's richest club.

Prediction: 3rd

What we said: Expect progress from Erik ten Hag’s squad as his methods become more ingrained but the ownership situation could still become a distraction.

How they performed: A huge disappointment that could still end with an FA Cup win. But Ten Hag looks destined to exit after a dismal Champions League and league campaign. Still, at least Sir Jim Ratcliffe has arrived.

Prediction: 16th

What we said: David Moyes looks light on options and again has Europe to contend with. Rancour from the fans is already appearing on the horizon.

How they performed: Moyes departs with his head held high after guiding a team that lost its best player in a British record transfer to another top-half finish and Europa League quarter-final. His replacement has a big job on his hands to mirror this success.

Prediction: 12th

What we said: Wilf Zaha has finally departed but rather than it being viewed as the end of an era, many fans believe a new and more exciting chapter is on the cards thanks to Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze.

How they performed: Things looked grim in the latter weeks of Roy Hodgson's reign but Oliver Glasner has been a breath of fresh air with Olise and Eze dazzling in an impressive end to the campaign.

Prediction: 9th

What we said: A mild regression seems inevitable. Roberto de Zerbi worked wonders last season [but] factor in Europa League exhaustion and it appears set to be a more than respectable finish in upper mid-table.

How they performed: Started well but that Thursday-Sunday fatigue and a lot of injuries have contributed to a stinking end to the campaign and it looks the right time to part ways with De Zerbi.

Prediction: 13th

What we said: The appointment of Andoni Iraola to replace Gary O’Neil, who exceeded all expectations last season, is an intriguing one.

How they performed: Iraola had a rocky opening six weeks but his team soon gelled and around Christmas they were in piping hot form. How he builds in the summer will be fascinating.

Prediction: 11th

What we said: Marco Silva turning down the Saudi riches is a big boost but another top half finish may be just out of reach.

How they performed: They have run out of stream towards the end, squandering hope of being in the top 10 but it has been a comfortable season with the loss of Mitrovic not being keenly felt.

Prediction: 18th

What we said: Julen Lopetegui aired his frustrations at the club’s sell-to-buy approach and the departure of Ruben Neves will hit them hard.

How they performed: Lopetegui quit a couple of days before the season started and his replacement, Gary O’Neil, has done a good job - with the scalps of big teams taken and mid-table never in doubt.

Prediction: 17th

What we said: In a financially precarious spot, Sean Dyche’s squad is unlikely to get the additions required to lift them away from a scrap.

How they performed: Dyche has done a decent job that has kept them well away from danger despite being deducted eight points for FFP breaches.

Prediction: 10th

What we said: Ivan Toney’s absence for the first half of the season because of his betting ban is a blow … but Thomas Frank has the system and personnel to ensure the Bees consolidate their spot in the mid-zone.

How they performed: It has been a long struggle and the impact of Toney has been disappointing - with recent crucial wins to pull them out of danger coming with the England striker sidelined by injury or on the bench.

Prediction: 14th

What we said: Winning once on the road last season was not good enough and a repeat would be deeply problematic.

How they performed: Far more problematic has been their issues off the pitch, a campaign defined by FFP and refereeing rants. Except the points deduction row to roll on despite survival.

Prediction: 20th

What we said: To survive would be the biggest Premier League shock since Leicester City won the title.

How they performed: The Hatters technically went into the final day not 100% sure of relegation, though only because of Forest’s points deduction. Rob Edwards and a band of spirited if limited pros deserve plenty of credit.

Prediction: 15th

What we said: Vincent Kompany redesigned how the Clarets play … and optimism is sky high at Turf Moor.

How they performed: Optimism soon turned to pessimism and they never looked really capable of producing a consistent run. Disappointing.

Prediction: 19th

What we said: Lack of investment in a squad packed with solid pros should mean they head straight back to the Championship.

How they performed: Awful under Paul Heckingbottom, even worse under Chris Wilder. One of the most dismal Premier League seasons on record and more than a century of goals conceded.
