Emery claims he is eyeing up La Liga for his next management job

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery wants his next management challenge to be back in his native Spain, saying he feels 'closer' to a LaLiga return than any other football league.

The former Sevilla boss lost his job at the Emirates in November following a string of poor results with fans calling for his head, and Mikel Arteta was later appointed as his successor.

Emery has since been linked with a handful of jobs, including the top role at Everton - even holding talks with the hierarchy at Goodison Park - before they eventually turned to Carlo Ancelotti. But now the 48-year-old has had time to reflect on his ambitions and has decided that the time is right for him to manage in LaLiga again.

The Spaniard enjoyed a hugely successful three stint with Sevilla that saw him win three Europa League titles in a row - rewarding him with a move to PSG.

And speaking to Eurosport, Emery said he would like to try his luck in Spain once more, saying he would not rule out a move to another division but was more likely to accept a role in LaLiga.

'I am open to training,' he said. 'In Spain, England, Italy, France or elsewhere, but if you ask me where [I think I will] be, I think I am closer to the Spanish league.'

Emery left Sevilla in 2016 and has since explored challenges in both Ligue 1 and the Premier League, but now he is hoping for a project in his home country that is passionate about.

'After four years I was out. If I have a good chance of coming back to Spain and I feel like it, I want to face it.

'The first objective is to return next season, but if I don't find anything that fits what I can get excited about or get to my heart, I'll wait.'

Like many of us, Emery is isolating at his home during the coronavirus lockdown and he revealed he has been using the spare time to improve his understanding of the game, researching past games and playing styles - hoping to return a better coach.

'I am watching many games, different types of teams, how they play,' he added. 'I try to improve. Also, I'm reading, writing, updating things from before.

'I try to use this moment to see what I can improve from what I have done so far, try to get out of this break prepared and with wider [ideas].'

Emery has managed two teams in LaLiga prior to his spell with Sevilla as he coached Almeria - guiding them to promotion to the top flight. He later spent four years at Valencia, where he secured two third-placed finishes and worked with stars such as David Silva and David Villa.
