Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined in with those laughing at the shin pads he wore against San Marino, amusingly joking on Twitter he had stuffed custard creams down his socks.
Calvert-Lewin netted twice for England on Thursday night as they thrashed minnows San Marino 5-0 at Wembley, with James Ward-Prowse, Raheem Sterling and Ollie Watkins also getting on the scoresheet.
But despite his goal-scoring heroics, it was Calvert-Lewin's choice of shin pads that garnered most of the attention at Wembley.
Football fans flocked to social media to poke fun at his shin pads, and after clearly being made aware of the jokes, the Everton striker himself decided to get involved.
Calvert-Lewin quipped on Twitter after the game: 'For anyone wondering... this is what I use for my shinnys', alongside a picture of a custard cream.
Plenty of England supporters joked that Calvert-Lewin had stuffed classic Nokia's down his socks.
One fan amusingly commented: 'It is in the rule book that players must wear shinpads in professional games, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin has stuffed a pair of Nokia 3210's down his socks and that ladies and gentlemen is why he will never be injured.'
Calvert-Lewin uses a Nokia flip phone as shinpad', another fan joked on Thursday night.
And the jokes kept on coming in, with another writing: 'Data shows that Calvert-Lewin reduced his chance of serious injury to the Tibia and Fibula bones by approx 99% due to wearing Nokia shin pads.'
But not everyone compared the 24-year-old Everton striker's shin pads to Nokia's.
One fan quipped: 'Calvert-Lewin wears custard creams for shin pads, pass it on.'
'Either a packet of benson and hedges for his shin pads or tik tak boxes I can’t decide,' another joked.
It is not the first-time Calvert-Lewin has used tiny shin pads after eagle-eyed fans spotted him wearing similar ones against Burnley at Turf Moor in December last year.
