Chelsea finally confirmed the signing of Enzo Fernandez on Wednesday after striking a deal late on deadline day, with the midfielder set to replace Jorginho as their new No 5.

The London club are yet to formally unveil their record-breaking £107million signing, though they teased that an official unveiling is to come shortly on Wednesday morning.

The Argentine, who won the World Cup alongside Lionel Messi in Qatar in December last year, signed an eight-and-a-half year contract which could see him at the club until 2031.

Chelsea were clearly not planning to unveil Fernandez's squad number just yet, with their teasing post containing his name above the Chelsea badge but without any pictures of his new strip.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday afternoon took matters into his own hands, though, posting a picture of Fernandez’s new No 5 shirt on Twitter ahead of the official unveiling.

Jorginho, who sealed a £12m move to London rivals Arsenal on deadline day, was the last person to occupy the No 5 shirt at Chelsea. Legendary midfielder Micahel Essien famously held the shirt prior to Jorginho's arrival in 2018.

Fernandez previously held the No 13 shirt for Benfica and still holds the No 24 strip for Argentina, which currently belongs to Reece James at Chelsea. Meanwhile, Jorginho will wear the No 20 shirt for Arsenal.

At one stage, it looked as if Chelsea wouldn't get their new No 5, with their pursuit of Fernandez heading into the last minutes of the transfer window as both clubs spent Tuesday locked in talks to try and get the move wrapped up.

The club made preparations for his medical in Portugal and organised a private jet for him to board on Wednesday to fly to England.

Both parties finally made a breakthrough just minutes before the 11pm deadline.

Sources had earlier indicated that Chelsea could fall just short and were ready to turn their attention to completing a summer move for Fernandez because sealing a deal for this season was proving too difficult.

But Tuesday night's agreement was met with huge relief given the club's determination to complete the move in January.
