Erik ten Hag in showdown talks with Man Utd star as transfer question pondered

Manchester United are in talks with Shola Shoretire over a new contract, with the Red Devils keen to tie him down to a long-term deal before sending him out on loan.

Shoretire made his first-team debut for United in February 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has played a total of five senior games. He holds the record as the club's youngest ever player in Europe, but is yet to feature under Erik ten Hag.

The 19-year-old spent time out on loan at League One side Bolton Wanderers last season and made 16 appearances, scoring once and providing two assists. And according to the Manchester Evening News, he could be set for another loan spell this season.

The report states that United view a loan move as 'the right next step for Shoretire to gain valuable experience and continue his growth', having received plenty of interest over the summer from clubs in the Championship and abroad.

It is also claimed that a permanent move could be on the cards, but United are keen for him to sign a new contract in order to 'protect his value'. Although Shoretire was not at his best for Bolton last season, Wanderers boss Ian Evatt has no doubt the teenager has a big future in the game.

"We didn't try and get him back [on loan], simply because the way we have configured the team is slightly different this season," Evatt told The Bolton News in September. "We didn't really want and out-and-out 10, we wanted someone who could play in different positions, like Carlos [Mendes Gomes].

"He is an extremely talented player and I think there were flashes of that for us last season, I'm thinking Charlton away, Peterborough United away, in that type of game he was outstanding. But, if anything, he wasn't consistent enough.

"He is a young player and that can be the case. I think he will go on and have a fantastic career but, for us, it was about needing something slightly different this season. I think with Shola he has been playing in that Under-21s team for quite a few years now and there comes a point where you have out-grown it and you need first team football.

"It goes for all the players in that age group, the more first team football you can get exposed to, the better it is for your development. I think Shola does have to go out again and get some more experience."
