The 2023 UEFA Euro Under 21 Championship gets underway on Wednesday evening and there's plenty of action to bring you from the tournament which is being hosted in Romania and Georgia.

It is the 24th edition of the championships with Spain and England coming into the competition as two of the big favourites to win.

Sixteen teams will play at the tournament which got underway in Georgia earlier tonight and we saw a huge upset too, as the home side stunned Portugal to get off to clinch a historic win in Tbilisi.

Meanwhile, Belgium and The Netherlands were also in action tonight, playing out a goalless draw, while Ukraine also defied the odds to defeat Croatia in what was an epic match in Bucharest.

Sports Mail brings you a round-up of all the key events from the opening matches of Group A and Group B.

Group A

Georgia 2-0 Portugal

The 2023 Euro U21 hosts got their tournament off on the right foot on Wednesday night after they upset the odds to beat Portugal 2-0 in the capital.

It was an action packed match and the Crusaders debut at the tournament, having failed in their last 14 times to qualify for the finals.

Giorgi Gagua broke the deadlock after 37 minutes, gliding the ball past Celton Biai in net, to put the home side one up.

They'd be back again soon after, with Georgiy Tsitaishvili whipping a curling corner that was met by the head of Saba Sazonov who leapt into the air to head home, catching the goalkeeper off guard.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half for the Portuguese side after Tomas Araujo was shown a straight red card, bringing down Giorgi Gocholeishvili on the edge of the box as the last man.

Portugal had some familiar names in their squad, including Wolves' forward Pedro Neto, Marseille full-back Nuno Tavares and 18-year-old prospect Joao Neves from Benfica.

But despite their quality, failed to convert their chances, with the young Selecao having the lion's share of possession, goal attempts and shots on target.

In fact, they had 17 goal attempts to Georgia's four, with Neto and Neves both having chances throughout the game but Georgia's defence outlasted them.

The Georgian's will play Belgium next while Portugal will take on The Netherlands.

Belgium 0-0 The Netherlands

Despite the scoreline, this game had plenty of action, with both teams failing to convert their chances throughout the match but it was perhaps a fair result given the end-to-end nature of this affair.

There was an early wake-up call for the young Belgian side though, with Kenneth Taylor hitting the woodwork in the seventh minute of the game, evading one defender before nearly beating the goalkeeper, sending his shot just wide of the target.

The Red Devils came back though with Yorbe Vertessen placing his shot just wide of the goalmouth after collecting a pass from Monaco's Eliot Matazo on the edge of the box, before winding up a powerful left-footed strike.

Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch proved dangerous in the first term, teeing up Brian Brobbery, who had perhaps, the best chance of the first 45 minutes, hitting a low effort into the hands of Maarten Vandevoordt in net.

The second half was much the same story, but it was the Belgian's who looked more likely to score having more goal attempts and possession than The Netherlands, but failed to hit home their chances.

Gravenberch, the captain, was back again to have a stab at goal himself early on in the second-half, before Brobbery connected nicely with a nicely timed through ball on the left hand side to force a save from the Belgian goalkeeper.

With less than ten minutes to go until full-time Vandevoordt was called into action for the Red Devils on multiple occasions, as too was the Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen, but thanks to the cat-like reflexes of both keepers, the game finished a draw and both sides will halve the points.

Group B

Ukraine 2-0 Croatia

Ukraine went top of Group B on Wednesday night, following a huge triumph against Croatia who reached the quarter-final in 2021.

It was a tough defeat for the Blazers who, alongside Spain, would have been a favourite to progress out of Group B ahead of this match, but will now need to win their next two matches to have the best chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages.

But it is the Ukrainian's who sit in the driving seat, after a strong start to the match, with their goal keeper, Anatolii Trubin lauding his side after the game saying: 'It is a big win for us. It was a difficult game with a tough opponent and we did really well. But we don't have much time to celebrate, as the next match is in just a few days.'

Ukraine, meanwhile, now sit in the driving seat in the group after a strong start to the match that saw them remain solid against a well drilled Croatian midfield, with Oleksii Kashchuk scoring their first goal after 19 minutes.

And it was a superbly taken solo effort from the 22-year-old, who dribbled his way past several defenders to bounce his shot off the inside of the post to score.

Ukraine were without their biggest talent Mykhailo Mudryk tonight but his side performed well in his absence, fending off the advances of Croatian forward Marko Bulat and Matija Frigan at the end of the first-half.

Minutes after the break, Ukraine doubled their lead, with Kaschuk playing a superb lofted pas to Danylo Sikan who headed past the goalkeeper from close range to score their second.

Croatia would go on to have 14 goal attempts in the second term, racking up 63 per cent possession in the process, but failed to get a goal back, with Ukraine going onto win the match.

It was a poor start to the Championship for Croatia though, with their goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski, saying: 'It didn't go well for us.

'We had our chances but we didn't make anything of them, as they did with theirs. We came here to do our best and to win games, we didn't do that today.'

Croatia have another tough game coming up in just three days time against Spain, while Ukraine will hope to continue their good form against Romania on Saturday.
