Former Chelsea player Yossi Benayoun has reopened the controversy over alleged racist abuse from his own Chelsea supporters by claiming he was called 'little Jew and worse' in last month's 2-2 draw at Anfield.
The Israel winger complained at the time that some Chelsea fans 'crossed the line' after he went on as a late substitute against his former club Liverpool.
He was roundly booed after replacing Eden Hazard in the 78th minute, apparently for claiming Chelsea had mishandled £50million signing Fernando Torres in an earlier interview, but it now transpires the worst abuse had already taken place before he went on.
‘I was warming up, in readiness for the substitution, when I started getting it from one or two fans,’ he said, in an interview in his homeland. ‘There were threatening words like “little so and so Jew” and other stuff that was worse.
‘I had never encountered anything like that before in all my career. I have played in Spain and the Premier League, and all over the world with the Israel national team, but I’ve never had that.
‘I suppose you have to accept there are racist supporters throughout the world who can target you at any time, but it’s still not nice. I complained about it to Chelsea officials, and they said they would investigate, along with the police.’
