Best captain picks for GW5

A key part of playing Fantasy Premier League is choosing your captain for every game week.

The player you select from your starting eleven as your captain will see his points total doubled from that round of fixtures. And if he is not involved in any way, your vice-captain for the week will instead have his normal points total doubled.

Said boost in points can often make or break your gameweek and see you move up or down the FPL ranks a fair bit.

So, picking the best captain each week is a decision you should give considerable thought to. And at 101, we are here to help, picking out the best three captain choices from each week.

Here are our picks for gameweek 5.

Cristiano Ronald, Manchester United (12.5m)

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to the Premier League by netting a brace vs Newcastle United.

And now, with a clash vs West Ham on the horizon, it does look as though the Portuguese will be another great captain pick in gameweek 5.

The Hammers have had a decent start to the campaign and are yet to lose a clash. However, they have also already shipped five goals in four league ties this term.

And, ahead of facing Man United, will have to take on Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday in a Europa League clash.

Thursday evening games generally lead to the sides involved not looking as sharp the weekend of the game, and a squad as small as West Ham’s is likely to feel this more than most – something Ronaldo and co. will no doubt be keen to take advantage of.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool (12.5m)

There are very few players who are unsellable in FPL, but one of them is most certainly Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian has once again begun the season looking as deadly as ever for Liverpool and has already provided three goals and two assists in four PL ties.

Salah also currently has the 4th-highest xG in the Premier League as well as the 3rd-highest xA.

And, though Crystal Palace are certainly finding their feet under Patrick Viera, you would assume Liverpool will prove too much for them, especially at Anfield.

Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea (11.6m)

Tottenham would begin their season in fine form. However, they would rather spectacularly collapse over the weekend vs Palace.

Japhet Tanganga, who has been one of Spurs’ best defenders in 2021/22, was sent off and is now suspended for the GW5 clash with Chelsea.

Eric Dier picked up an injury in the first half vs Palace and now looks to be a doubt for the Chelsea game.

This just leaves the inexperienced Joe Rodon and South American duo Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez to line out at centre-back vs Chelsea. However, Romero has very little Premier League experience, Sanchez is fairly unreliable and both players are only set to return to the UK on Saturday – meaning they are not going to have had any real time to train with the squad before Sunday’s game.

As a result, a dominant Chelsea side should run riot vs their London rivals, with Romelu Lukaku once again expected to bully another Premier League defence.
