Cheap FPL defenders
The Premier League gets underway in less than a month’s time and along with it comes the return of Fantasy Premier League football.
Ahead of FPL restarting, there has been a fair amount of debate regarding the best 4.5m defenders for your side.
Said players can be incredibly valuable as they allow you to spend big on other areas of your squad whilst also earning you a decent return.
Up until very recently, Brighton star Tariq Lamptey seemed to be the most popular 4.5m defender pick, which makes sense given the Seagulls’ defensive record last term and Lamptey’s attacking exploits before his injury.
However, news would break on Saturday evening suggesting that Lamptey will not be fit enough to start the season.
Mitchell an option?
This, of course, leaves a lot of players needing to replace the defender in their FPL side.
And one player who could well become a viable option is Tyrick Mitchell.
The 21-year-old did not start 2020/21 as Crystal Palace’s main left-back, but he was handed more chances at the end of the campaign and now looks to have assumed that role following Patrick van Aanholt leaving on a free.
One potential downside to picking Mitchell over Lamptey was his lack of attacking returns, with Palace generally a more conservative side under Roy Hodgson.
However, Patrick Viera is now at the helm, and he seems to be implementing some changes, which could benefit Mitchell’s FPL potential.
Speaking after Palace’s recent friendly vs Ipswich, Mitchell was discussing how his game has changed under Viera, explaining  that there is more emphasis on him to get forward and join attacks:
“I think the things that have changed in my game personally: I’m more attacking.
‘There’s more emphasis on me getting forward and joining in on the attacks.
‘It’s something that I feel is going to add to my game. I’d love to get more goals here and there and more assists, and show a different side to me.
‘It’s an exciting time going into the new season, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.’
This of course, could well lead to the full-back earning many more attacking returns in 2021/22.
