Fans are left furious that Brighton's Danny Welbeck has been included in England's 55-man squad

Danny Welbeck is a surprise name in Gareth Southgate's provisional 55-man squad ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The Brighton & Hove Albion striker, who has 42 caps to his name, has not featured for the Three Lions since way back in 2018 in a 1-0 friendly win over Switzerland at the King Power Stadium.

The 31-year-old, however, has plenty of major tournament experience featuring in three different competitions for his country and notching 16 times for England.

It is his return to form for the Seagulls who have started the season brightly that has perhaps caught the eye of boss Southgate.

Welbeck has not scored yet this season, but has picked up three assists and proved with versatility under both Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi after overcoming a number of seasons with constant injury problems.

Unlike, Southgate fans are not happy that the former Arsenal and Manchester United forward is even in contention to board the plane next month.

Supporters have taken to social media to criticise the selection of Welbeck with the provision squad yet to be cut down to a 26-man team.

One fan posted: 'What I have just seen Danny Welbeck in the 55 man England provisional squad, Southgate is awful.

A second simply put: 'Danny Welbeck? Yeah lads we're finished.

A third said: 'Welbeck. No goal in 11 games this season. Not scored more than 6 league goals since 2014.

Another added: 'Welbeck?! He hasn't scored a single goal.

One Twitter user agreed with the comments, by saying: 'Welbeck has been absolutely pants ffs should be nowhere near it.'

Other fans are concerned that Welbeck may be given the nod ahead of less experience international strikers such as in-form Newcastle striker Callum Wilson after the recent announcement.

A supporter posting: 'If Welbeck gets in over Wilson hands are being thrown.'

Boss Southgate will select his 26-man party for Qatar next Thursday but there aren't expected to be too many surprises, though the injuries to Kyle Walker and Reece James has raised questions over the make-up of England's defensive options.

The England manager's final squad will be whittled down from an original list of 55 names, that was submitted to FIFA last month.
