Football fans on Twitter were quick to celebrate Luis Chavez's stunning free-kick from range to put Mexico 2-0 up against Saudi Arabia in the must-win encounter.
Chavez - who plies his trade at Pachuca in his home nation - fired his side into a two-goal ascendancy with the staggering curled left-footed effort into the top-right corner of the Saudi Arabian goal in the 51st minute of the game.
The goal has been hailed as the goal of the tournament by football fans on Twitter, who were sent into a frenzy as they watched the action unfold.
One fan wrote: 'Goal of the tournament settled.'
Another predicted a bright future for the Mexican, adding: 'After that goal, he’ll be in Europe. Goal of the tournament so far.'
A third believed it would be unlikely for anyone to go one better than Chavez over the rest of the competition, writing: 'Mexico has just produced the goal of the tournament there is no topping this banger!'
And a fourth compared it to Marcus Rashford's free-kick for England on Tuesday night, saying: 'Rashford last night...Chavez tonight. Richarlison has competition for 'Goal of the Tournament''
And one viewer was clearly excited by the stunner, claiming: 'Oh my god that's the goal of the tournament!!!!'
The 26-year-old netted just his second goal in 12 caps for Mexico, and was mobbed by his team-mates both on and off the pitch following the screamer.
Henry Martin put El Tri ahead just two minutes after the interval, with Mexico needing a comprehensive win to go through to the second round.
However, with Saudi Arabian striker Salem Aldawsari scoring late on to make it 2-1 in the dying embers of the thrilling encounter.
Mexico still needed another goal in the game regardless, level with Poland on goal difference and head-to-head after their 2-0 defeat by Argentina, with Robert Lewandowski and Co making it through by virtue of receiving fewer bookings.
