Fans mock Jones as he ends up upside down off the pitch

It was a terrible night for Manchester United and an even worse one for defender Phil Jones who took the brunt of the jokes following the Red Devils' shock loss in the Carabao Cup to Derby.

A sensational penalty shootout saw some fantastic penalties without a single one missed until Jones stepped up with the score 7-6 and gave Scott Carson a reasonably easy save.

But fans had already been laughing at him beforehand after a tussle with Jayden Bogle resulted in the defender rolling off the pitch, crashing upside down into the advertising boards and finishing in a rather unflattering position.

After goalkeeper Sergio Romero bizarrely handled the ball outside his area, causing him to be sent off, it took a lot of work for Jones to be the more comical player on the pitch.

Fans took to Twitter to point out that unfortunate position Jones finished in was typical of the clumsy defender. It didn't help the defender that he also ended up faceplanting while running with the ball.

The England international joined Manchester United from Blackburn in 2011 as a highly rated player, impressing Sir Alex Ferguson with his leadership skills at a young age.

And while Jones has won silverware at United, he's never been able to hold down a permanent place in the starting line-up for club or country.

The heavy-handed approach of Jones doesn't leave fans feeling confident so after 13 perfectly placed penalties, nobody was surprised that the centre back ended that streak.

With Jones making it glaringly obvious that he was trying to send Carson the wrong way, the former England international had no problem in making the save - giving Derby and new first-time manager Frank Lampard a monumental boost.

Meanwhile the pressure is mounting on Mourinho who will have to take all three points from Saturday's trip to West Ham if he wants any chance of keeping some United fans on his side.
