It was not the end to their pre-season campaign that David Moyes or West Ham would have hoped for.
In a week's time they will travel to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth in the first game of the new Premier League season.
But Moyes certainly has some thinking to do after the Irons were beaten 4-0 by Bayer Leverkusen today, notably conceding three goals inside the first 40 minutes of the match, in a poor performance away from home.
It comes as concerns are starting to mount over the the club's transfer policies. The east London side are yet to make a signing in the transfer window, having lost Declan Rice and Manuel Lanzini already this season.
David Moyes' side are also set to lose wantaway striker Gianluca Scamacca who has reportedly travelled to Italy today as he looks to complete a £21million plus add-ons deal to join Atalanta.
But Mail Sport understands that David Moyes has been embroiled in a row with the club over their recruitment tactics, with those reports suggesting his job at the east London club was under threat.
Today's opponents, Bayer Leverkusen, utilised their new signings Jonas Hoffman and Victor Boniface to much effect, with both getting on the score sheet, while the 22-year-old Nigerian striker, Boniface, was involved in all four of the goals and was a handful for the West Ham defence throughout the match.
Following the loss, some have taken to social media to slam the Scottish manager and their new technical director, Tim Steidten, with one Twitter user blaming the pair for the defeat.
'All on Moyes and Steidten this,' they wrote. 'Moyes has dithered on signings and got tactically out schooled. Steidten has built a very very good Bayer [Leverkusen] side with a great manager. I know who I would be backing.'
Another said: 'Tim Steidten took his new club to Germany to face his old club, just to emphasise to [David] Sullivan how far WHU are behind with Moyes in charge.'
They weren't the only ones taking a dig at the London side, with Bayer Leverkusen's social media team teasing West Ham on Twitter, writing: 'Are we massive now, @WestHam?'
The Irons went down a goal within nine minutes, after Kurt Zouma conceded a foul on the edge of the box. Hofmann proceeded to fire the ball off the post and into the back of the net to put West Ham behind early.
Things went from bad to worse as Thilo Kehrer conceded an own goal to double the host's lead, before Boniface would strike a thumping effort past Lukasz Fabianski to make it 3-0 after 38 minutes.
'Well played lads,' one fan wrote on Twitter. 'Can honestly say we are ready and rearing to go for the new season and I cant wait to beat Bournemouth 5-0 [on the] opening day of the season with Barnes and Borges getting a brace each.'
'Try to cut back on signing players now, it's getting a bit too much,' another added. 'Squad is packed out and looking solid!'
Others questioned whether the club should keep Moyes, with one saying 'Can you leave Moyes in Germany? Completely outplayed.'
Another added: 'Well these new signings must have impressed... Oh wait...'
West Ham ultimately went on to concede a penalty late into the second half, that Robert Andrich would convert to extend their lead to 4-0.
