Sky Sports have been called out by fans after making an embarrassing error during their coverage of Sunderland's Championship play-off clash with Coventry City.

Sunderland won the first leg of the semi-final tie 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena over the weekend to edge towards booking their place in the final against Sheffield United later this month.

The second leg kicked off on Tuesday evening and neither side managed to make a breakthrough in the early stages at the Stadium of Light.

However, fans suddenly spotted that the scoreboard in the top left corner on Sky had started showing that Coventry were 2-1 up on the night to level the score at 3-3 on aggregate.

Supporters were left bemused by the error, and took to social media to question what exactly was going on.

'What are Sky doing with the score in the Sunderland v Coventry game, saying it's 2-1 Coventry?' one puzzled fan asked.

'Sky showing the score as 2-1 Coventry for a minute reyt (sic) confused me there, how did that even happen?' another supporter added.

One X user joked: 'Anyone else see that score change in the Sunderland-Coventry game on Sky Sports? I thought I was hallucinating.'

A Sunderland fan account saw the funny side, as they wrote: 'Sky really want Coventry to win, like what's going on with the scoreboard,' alongside a crying with laughter emoji.

The score was corrected after a little over a minute, but that was still long enough for eagle-eyed fans to notice the blunder.

With a place at Wembley at stake, Frank Lampard's Coventry pushed for the opening goal of the game to bring themselves level in the tie, but were unable to break the deadlock in the first half.
