Sir Alex Ferguson spent an hour in the company of Chris Wilder after Manchester United were held 3-3 by Sheffield United, according to reports.

Ferguson has long been a fan of Wilder's and is viewed as something of a mentor figure for the Blades manager, having helped him out when he was working his way up the leagues.

And the iconic former United boss asked if he could be taken down to see Wilder before they relaxed with a glass of wine, according to the Sun.

Wilder almost certainly appreciated the gesture as he regularly credits those who helped him out in the early stages of his career.

Ferguson was famous for sharing a glass of wine with opponents during his managerial career.

Sheffield United gave Ferguson's old side a tough test when they clashed on Sunday afternoon.

Wilder's side went two goals ahead before United roared back with a blistering spell of three goals.

But their comeback was eventually snuffed out as substitute Ollie McBurnie bagged late on to give the Blades the draw.

Ferguson watched the game alongside his old ally David Gill and United chief executive Ed Woodward in the stands at Bramall Lane.
