Spurs defender Micky van de Ven hit back at critics following Tottenham Hotspur's triumphant UEFA Europa League final.
Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 to win their first European trophy since 1984. Dutch international Micky van de Ven played a massive role in Spurs' triumph, saving a ball from the goal line with an acrobatic attempt to stop Rasmus Hojlund from scoring in the second half.
"I haven't seen it back yet, but I heard it was good," Van de Ven told Dutch media outfit Ziggo Sport after the match. "I fell on the artificial grass, so that hurt my back."
The 24-year-old centre-half took the opportunity after the match to hit back at some early jabs at his move from Wolfsburg to Tottenham. "This is unbelievable. Everyone joked that I was not going to win any prizes here. We have now proved them wrong," said Van de Ven.
"This is an incredible feeling. I have had quite a rotten season with injuries, but now we are here."
Van de Ven made quick strides in the footballing world, moving from boyhood club FC Volendam to Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur in two years following a short stint at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
With their Europa League victory, Van de Ven and Tottenham Hotspur will play in next year's UEFA Champions League. "I hadn't even thought about that yet," he admitted. "That's gonna be my first time too!"
