Five England youngsters 'to star at Euro U-21 Championships in opener'

England's Under-21s kick off their European Championship campaign with a mouth-watering encounter against France on Tuesday evening.

Aidy Boothroyd's side is stacked with young talent and are among the favourites to win the tournament for the first time since 1984.

Only the top team in each group are guaranteed qualification so the Young Lions need to hit the ground running against Les Bleus.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at five players for fans to pin their hope on over the next fortnight.

Jake Clarke-Salter

England's captain and rock at the heart of central defence spent last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem from Chelsea and is well equipped to handle his responsibility.

He has a measured head on his shoulders and as a player and will also look to lead by example with his superb athleticism against some deadly forwards in the tournament.

Moussa Dembele's match-up with Clarke-Salter in the opener is likely to be key and if the defender can keep a lid on the former Celtic man then his side have a great chance of starting with three points.

James Maddison

Its says a lot about Maddison's debut season with Leicester that he's already being linked with big clubs.

The attacking midfielder is a brilliant technician and terrorised Premier League defences all year for the Foxes. Teams will be wary of any free-kicks given away in his arc too as he's a lethal set-piece specialist.

Whoever starts up front for Boothroyd will be the beneficiary of Maddison's vision and weight of pass and France would do well to keep close tabs on the former Norwich youngster.

At 22, he has more experience than many of his team-mates and no doubt they'll look to him guide the way in Cesena on Tuesday evening.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

A £50million move to Manchester United beckons for the Crystal Palace starlet but he'll have to put those ambitions to one side and focus on the job at hand.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold performing so well, Gareth Southgate will know he has two outstanding talents to choose from at right-back over the next few years.

Wan-Bissaka is further behind in his development but showed he has more than enough to mix it at the top level already, with searing pace, burgeoning self-confidence and so much time on the ball, he could be one of the players of the tournament.

Reiss Nelson

Like Clarke-Salter, Nelson is another to have gleaned experience and maturity playing abroad.

The skilful Arsenal winger shone in the Bundesliga and netted seven times in 23 games for the German side last season.

He loves the Gunners and is working tirelessly to break through into Unai Emery's first-team plans. A strong Euros campaign to back up his work on loan last season will help in that regard and he's expected to start in Cesena on Tuesday.

Mason Mount

Many will feel Manchester City's Phil Foden should fill this slot but Boothroyd is set to hand the Chelsea youngster a start against the French instead.

No doubt Foden will be desperate to get on but Mount played more competitive football last season and was a regular in Frank Lampard's Derby team.

With the Blues legend set to become permanent boss at Stamford Bridge, Mount is well-placed to excel at his parent club.

He made 42 appearances for the Rams and scored 11 times last season and will look to carry that momentum with him for the Young Lions.
