Five questions Guardiola must find answers to before Man City face Real Madrid

  /  autty

The rescheduling of Manchester City's Premier League fixture with West Ham United has given Pep Guardiola another game to fine tune plans for the Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

So with a two-legged tie against the La Liga leaders looming, what are the biggest issues Guardiola will be mulling over before the game at the Bernabeu?

Formation

For the previous two seasons City were always recognisable when they took to the pitch, playing in that 4-3-3 formation with two No. 8s and wingers usually on their natural side, one getting to the byline and the other attacking the far post.

But that familiarity has become a problem this season and the machine has begun to look clunky. To solve that Guardiola has tried out new formations, most regularly a back three, while also returning to his tried and trusted 4-3-3 at times.

So how does he play it in the Bernabeu? Guardiola has often - and unfairly - been accused of overthinking City's Champions League defeats, but this is a genuinely difficult call. Does he take the risk of a back three and a shape that is still relatively new to City? Or does he go with a formation that they are familiar with but which hasn't always worked this season?

Midfield make-up

Part of that conundrum will feed into the midfield Guardiola picks in Madrid. In a 4-3-3 this season the City boss has often looked to get some support alongside Rodri, but a return to Spain should suit the former Atletico Madrid man.

City will be most concerned with staying in the game however, a clean sheet in the away leg will be a positive result, which may encourage Guardiola to offer more support in midfield, with Ilkay Gundogan also playing a deeper role.

The more ambitious option is to go with two No. 8s again, unleashing Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva against the Spanish giants and looking to find an away goal or two.

Sterling's fitness

Leroy Sane is back in training with City but there is little to no chance of him being fit enough to start in the Bernabeu, so Guardiola will be desperate to have Raheem Sterling available.

The winger picked up a hamstring strain against Tottenham recently and faces a race against time to be fit for the first leg of the last-16 tie. His form has been mixed of late but he's still probably the attacker that Real will be most worried about.

Without him City's wingers pick themselves, with Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva called on, yet the latter has struggled to recreate the impact he had last season, which is another issue taxing Guardiola at the moment.

Laporte's return

In defence Guardiola will be reliant on having Aymeric Laporte fit and available to try and nullify Real. In a back four he'll be partnering Fernandinho, while a back three could see Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones or Eric Garcia drafted in.

But Laporte is a key man. City have missed him defensively this season and they've also missed his crisp passing from the back as well. Guardiola will hope he can feature against West Ham or Leicester, given he's been unavailable since playing for 78 minutes on his return at Sheffield United more than three weeks ago.

Penalty taker

There might be a few City fans averting their eyes in the away end at the Bernabeu if City get a penalty. The Blues have had a nightmare from 12 yards this season and at Tottenham recently the previously reliable Gundogan was the latest culprit.

All of which gives Guardiola a headache when it comes to selecting his penalty taker against Real. Sergio Aguero hasn't failed from the spot since his costly miss at Spurs in this competition last April, but his overall record isn't great. Who gets the call in this tie is anybody's guess.
