Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold were among some high-profile names omitted from Thomas Tuchel's 26-man England squad for this summer's World Cup.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Manchester United's Luke Shaw and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton also miss out after the travelling party was announced on Friday.

There were no places for either Lewis Hall or Jarrod Bowen, while Harry Maguire had already confirmed that he had not been selected to play in his third World Cup.

Tuchel has chosen to include some surprise names in his ranks, with Al-Ahli's Ivan Toney among the attackers after scoring 32 goals in the Saudi Pro League this season and Arsenal's Noni Madueke was also picked.

Bayer Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah is included despite making just one international appearance for the Three Lions, with Newcastle defender Dan Burn selected too.

Djed Spence was also named, while James Garner and Wharton were overlooked for the experience of Jordan Henderson.

Kobbie Mainoo and Eberechi Eze have secured seats on the plane.

And in-form Ollie Watkins, fresh from leading Aston Villa to their first major trophy in 30 years after their Europa League success, is listed alongside captain Harry Kane and Toney in attack, pipping Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a spot in the squad despite his fine season for Leeds United.

John Stones, who is highly thought of by Tuchel, gets the nod despite struggling with injury this season, with Chelsea's Levi Colwill failing to make the final cut.

The standout absentee may be Gibbs-White, who, since the turn of the year, has registered 17 goal involvements (13 goals, four assists) in all competitions, a total only Kane (32) and Mason Greenwood (18) can better among English players across Europe's top five leagues.

There are 16 different clubs represented in England's 2026 World Cup squad, the second most for any major tournament after the 1962 World Cup (17).

In addition, 22 of England's squad for the 2026 World Cup have won a trophy with their club since the start of last season, which could be behind Tuchel's selection process.

The World Cup, which takes place across the United States, Mexico and Canada, starts on June 11 with England's first game coming six days later against Croatia.

England then face Ghana in Foxborough on June 23 before rounding out their Group L campaign against Panama on June 27.
