A former Man United and Chelsea midfielder is on the verge of joining French side Lyon until 2026.

After joining Rennes from Roma in the summer, Nemanja Matic has reportedly struggled to settle and sources have claimed he has been trying to push for an immediate exit.

Rennes addressed a recent training absence from the Serbian earlier this month, branding it 'wholly incomprehensible for an experienced player under contract until 2025' and stated that they were waiting for an explanation.

Matic then took to social media to explain to his followers his reasoning, and that he plans to return to the club.

However, now according to Fabrizio Romano a deal is in place between Rennes and Lyon for the player.

The transfer guru wrote: 'Nemanja Matić, on the verge of joining Olympique Lyon!

'Deal in place also between clubs with Rennes — as @FabriceHawkins called.

'Verbal agreement in place with Matić on contract valid until June 2026 — now waiting on documents and signature. Here we go soon.'

Matic, now 35, joined Rennes in the summer on a free transfer from Roma, leaving behind Jose Mourinho with his last game being a penalty shoot-out defeat in the Europa League final.

He has since made 19 appearances for his new club, who sit 10th in the Ligue 1 table.

Previous reports suggested Matic was considering retirement if he could not secure a move away in this transfer window.

His ideal destination is said to be the Premier League.
