Former Man Utd starlet Macheda joins Greek side Panathinaikos on three-year deal

Former Manchester United starlet Federico Macheda has sealed his free transfer to Panathinaikos on a three-year contract.

Macheda burst onto the scene at Old Trafford in style, scoring a brilliant winner against Aston Villa at the age of 17 after coming off the substitutes bench in 2009.

But the Italian striker's hopes of becoming a regular within the first team were dashed after he spent the next two years on the fringes of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

Macheda was then sent out on loan several times as he looked to get more game time but none of the moves turned permanent.

He ended up joining Cardiff on a free transfer but after  being released by the Welsh outfit, he moved back to Italy and signed for Serie B side Novara in 2016.

And there, he managed to finally enjoy regular match time, scoring 10 goals in 49 league appearances for the club.

And the 27-year-old's form has now earned him a move to Greek outfit Panathinaikos, who are looking to turn around their fortunes.

Macheda left Novara after his contract expired at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
