The former Tottenham Hotspur man was linked briefly with a return in recent months and a reunion with the Argentine but has taken a new role

Tottenham's former technical secretary Ramon Planes has accepted a new job with Real Betis amid links with a return to north London.

The 55-year-old worked at Spurs during the first season of the Mauricio Pochettino era in 2014/15 with a scouting remit and is close friends with the Argentine, who is set to join Chelsea as their new manager. Planes worked under then Tottenham director of football Paul Mitchell before leaving the club.

The Spaniard then went on to work at various clubs in his homeland with spells in particular at Barcelona and Getafe. He has been linked with director of football roles across Europe in recent years, including at Newcastle United and there were reports in recent months hinting at a return to Tottenham and a potential reunion with Pochettino as Fabio Paratici's time at the club headed towards its end.

However, with the Argentine expected to head across London to Chelsea, Planes has also headed in a different direction after being confirmed as the new sporting director of football at Real Betis this week. He admitted that there was some interest in his services from clubs outside Spain.

"The club (Betis) is in a growth phase, it is doing things very well and the trust that the board of directors has shown towards me in recent weeks, it is true that there were other possibilities from abroad, but it was clear to me that Real Betis was an ideal club for me to continue growing as a professional and to contribute all the knowledge I have," he said.

Daniel Levy is set to begin his search for a new director of football to replace Paratici following his resignation and the Spurs chairman is also leading the hunt for a new head coach to replace Antonio Conte.
