France's Hugo Lloris reveals he sent Harry Kane a text after penalty miss

Hugo Lloris has revealed he sent Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane a text to lift his spirits after he missed a penalty in England's World Cup quarter-final loss to France.

Kane had scored a penalty earlier in the game and, to the surprise of France's players, stepped up again when England were awarded a second spot-kick for a shove on Mason Mount.

The Tottenham striker sent his strike well over Lloris' bar and it proved decisive as England were knocked out.

Kane was in tears on the pitch at the end, devastated to have spurned the opportunity to equalise, and Lloris has now revealed he sent his club team-mate a text from the dressing room afterwards,

'I don't need to go too much further, but we had a text after the game, but it was not easy to find the words straight after the game in the changing room,' Lloris explained.

'I think he needed some rest, but it was a difficult time for the England national team and for Harry.

'But I think he can be proud of what he's done for the national team during this World Cup. I think in football history many top players miss important penalties.'

Ex-Germany striker Jurgen Klinsmann believes Kane was 'overthinking' his second penalty given there was a lengthy VAR delay before he took it.

From Lloris' perspective though, Kane is not the first, and won't be the last, star player to miss a penalty at a major tournament.

'Players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe [have missed],' he said.

'I've no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and continue to shine for Tottenham and his national team.'

As England captain Kane has assumed responsibility as France went on to run out 2-1 winners, with Olivier Giroud's heading booking their spot in the semi-finals.

'It comes down to execution', Kane said in the aftermath. 'As captain, I take it on the chin and responsibility missing the penalty.

'It is hard to take for sure but I can be proud of the group, proud of each other for what we've done.

'This will hurt for a while but we will dust ourselves down to get ready in the future.'

Kane returned from Qatar with his team-mates on Sunday and he has since been given a week off to overcome the heartache of his miss as he prepares for a return to domestic action.

Tottenham resume their Premier League season against Brentford on Boxing Day and given Richarlison is nursing an injury, Spurs boss Antonio Conte will need Kane to hit the ground running to breathe life back into their top four bid.
