Gary Lineker is among the celebrities who have called for the football calendar to be suspended worldwide due to the continued coronavirus outbreak.

The Match of the Day presenter and former England star believes football should follow the NBA's lead by suspending all forms of the professional game with immediate effect.

Serie A in Italy and Spain's LaLiga have both decided to postpone matches while the Premier League is on course to go ahead as scheduled this weekend.

UEFA have called an emergency meeting next Tuesday to discuss whether the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2020 will continue to be played.

UEFA said in a statement: 'Discussions will include all domestic and European competitions, including UEFA EURO 2020.

'Further communication will be made following those meetings.'

Lineker and several other celebrities have hit out at football's decision makers for their slow reaction to a deadly worldwide virus.

Lineker tweeted: 'The NBA has suspended the season. Football is heading that way too. Can’t see how it won’t happen.'

MailOnline columnist Piers Morgan echoed Lineker's thoughts on Twitter.

Morgan said on social media: 'Cancel football this season. Now.'

The Good Morning Britain host also said he doesn't understand how Liverpool were allowed to play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night when Madrid is in lockdown.

Morgan retweeted a video of Klopp refusing to shake hands with supporters with the German furiously saying: 'Put your hands away you f****** idiots'.

Morgan believes Klopp is a hypocrite because he still allowed the fixture to go ahead.

He tweeted: 'Yet he agreed to the game taking place with 3000 Madrid fans in the ground despite Madrid being in virtual lockdown & the same fans being banned from watching games in their own city. #DontBeLikeJurgen.'

Morgan's breakfast host rival Dan Walker also questioned how elite level football is still being played.

He wrote: 'Every domestic league - Champions League - Europa League - Euro 2020 - All under scrutiny but not until next Tuesday.'

Stan Collymore hit out at football's leading authorities for appeasing sponsors over supporters.
