Gary Lineker urges Trent Arnold to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid

Gary Lineker insists that Trent Alexander-Arnold would thrive at Real Madrid and has urged the England star to ditch Liverpool for Spain.

The Match of the Day presenter, who spent three seasons at Barcelona in the eighties, went on to say that the Madrid club would be a 'great fit' for Alexander-Arnold and the move made 'a lot of sense'.

Liverpool's imperious start to the season has only been marred by speculation over the future of three of their key players: Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold as their contracts near expiration.

After a 5-0 victory at West Ham which extended Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points - with a game in hand over second-place Nottingham Forest - Salah admitted he was 'far away' from signing a new deal.

Alexander Arnold, meanwhile, is repeatedly being linked to the Bernabeu to join his England team-mate, and great friend, Jude Bellingham with a bombshell report in Spain last week claiming that a move is almost complete.

And, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said that he feels that Alexander-Arnold's departure is inevitable.

'It seems to make a lot of sense to me,” he said.

'Free transfer is how Real Madrid have done things recently.

'He (Alexander-Arnold) is really close to Jude Bellingham and would fit in there beautifully. He would be a massive success. They wouldn’t focus on his defending critically as we do here – overly in my opinion. It’s a great fit and would be a huge loss for Liverpool, but they have a youngster coming through (Conor Bradley) who has done really well.

'I think it is highly likely that will happen, although I have no inside information whatsoever.'

Alexander-Arnold, 26, was born on Merseyside and  has been at the Reds since 2004, breaking into the first team in 2016.

His home club are flying both domestically and in Europe this seaon - topping both the Premier League and Champions League tables. However, Lineker insists that when Real Madrid come calling, they are impossible to reject.

'How do you say no to Real Madrid?' he said.

'Liverpool is an incredible football club, but a fresh challenge, playing abroad, I did it myself.

'Playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona is truly special. However strong and powerful and rich the Premier League is, the world’s greats still go to Barcelona and Real Madrid. The only exception in recent times is (Erling) Haaland. That aside, they go there.

'He (Alexander-Arnold) will love it there. It will be amazing. They’ll worship and appreciate his passing range. He is in the prime of his career. I wouldn’t begrudge him.'
