Pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have engaged in a spirited exchange on Twitter ahead of Manchester United's second Premier fixture at Brentford.
The online sparring began after Neville posted a Tweet asking for opinions on Saturday's game at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Liverpool legend was quick to quote tweet his colleague, writing:
'I’m thinking you will call for the Glazers to sell the club, after not saying it once while they paid you.'
Never one to take banter lying down, Neville pointed out the success United had enjoyed during his years with the club:
'Whilst we were battering your lot and winning league title after league title'
The former Valencia manager then shared a screenshot of an article from 2011 in which Carragher had said that then-Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet had to take some responsibility for the failings at the club.
Carragher again fired back at Neville, claiming that United's success was down to Sir Alex Ferguson and that the former full-back was still being paid by the United regime:
'Because of SAF, so if you get another top manager the Glazers are fine to stay! You still getting paid as an ambassador'
However Neville was quick to refute the accusations:
'That’s a lie! Not been paid a penny from the club in 11 years!!'
Carragher then turned the conversation to the topic of Salford City, a club that Neville co-owns with fellow Class of 92 alumni David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.
Commenting on the club's high turnover of managers since the group took ownership in 2014, Carragher wrote:
'I don’t like to make excuses for my or my teams poor performances, you should try that approach at Salford & stop sacking managers!'
Neville defended the sackings however, writing:
'Sacked one manager after 4 months ( needed to happen) others had 3.5 years , 2.5yrs and 1.5yrs!'
United travel to Brentford on Saturday looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening weekend defeat to Brighton in Erik ten Hag's first competitive game in charge of the club.
Though Ten Hag has strengthened his side by bringing in the likes of Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez, United's transfer window has been marred by the ongoing speculation over wantaway talisman Cristiano Ronaldo's future at the club.
Meanwhile talks between United and Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot have reportedly improved in recent days, with United’s football director John Murtough tracelling to Italy in attempt to finalise the deal.
