Gascoigne breaks silence over Scottish Football Hall of Fame snub

Paul Gascoigne has spoken out for the first time about his snub from the Scottish Football Hall of Fame by tweeting a video of the famous goal he scored against Scotland at Euro 96.

Rangers legend Gascoigne was set to be honoured for his three-year stint at Ibrox with a place in the Hall of Fame, but the invite has since been rescinded after members of the Scottish FA threatened to boycott the ceremony.

Thousands of fans have since signed a petition urging organisers to reverse their decision, and Gascoigne has now taken to Twitter to give his own thoughts.

Alongside a video of his famous England goal against Scotland at Euro 96, the 51-year-old wrote: 'I played some of the best football in my career at Rangers and loved the support of the fans.

'I don't need to be in The Scottish Hall Of Fame to be recognised as one of the best I feel the love & support of the People and know I was the best Love you all GAZZA xxxx'.

Underneath the statement is a picture of the Rangers Hall of Fame at Ibrox, with the words 'Only One Hall of Fame Matters' emblazoned above.

The 12-second video of his legendary volley at Wembley and subsequent celebration was accompanied by a message directly to the Scottish FA reading: 'No hard feelings xxxx'.

Gascoigne was originally invited to a plush awards dinner on October 21 at Hampden Park after being proposed by the public and chosen by a panel.

But controversially the name of the former Rangers star will no longer be put forward, with the Hall of Fame's committee citing 'concerns over the state of Paul's health'.

However, this follows reports that a number of the Scottish Football Association's board members were set to boycott the dinner because of concerns over Gascoigne's suitability for the honour.

His association with incidents of domestic abuse, racism and sectarianism led some SFA members to turn down their invitation to the ceremony.

The subsequent decision to withdraw his nomination has received widespread criticism though, with Rangers legend Ally McCoist labelling it an 'embarrassment'.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: 'We got the best of Gascoigne when he was at Rangers. He lit up Scottish football.

'Does he deserve his place in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame? One hundred per cent. In his three-year spell at Rangers he was nothing short of sensational.'

Vinnie Jones, a former rival of the Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder, said: 'Gazza has worked his backside off over the last couple of years to sort those (mental health) issues out and he's on the road to recovery but this is a massive kick in the nuts.'
