Gedson Fernandes is 'wanted by Galatasaray' with Tottenham midfielder expected to return to Benfica

Galatasaray reportedly want to sign Gedson Fernandes with the midfielder expected to return to Benfica this month after a disappointing loan spell at Tottenham.

Fernandes joined Spurs on an 18-month loan deal last January with the club holding the option to make the move permanent for £45million.

But the 22-year-old hasn't featured for Jose Mourinho's side in the Premier League this season with his two appearances coming in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Fernandes will return to Benfica before joining Galatasaray on loan.

Benfica are said to be willing to cut the midfielder's spell in London short if another club agrees to take him on loan for the remainder of the season.

Serie A side Torino have also shown an interest in Fernandes but now face competition for his signature.

Spurs fought off competition to sign the Portugal international last year but he no longe appears to be part of Mourinho's plans.

The midfielder made 12 appearances in all competitions for the club in the 2019-2020 season but failed to register a goal or assist.

Last month, Benfica boss Jorge Jesus said Fernandes would have been better off never joining the Premier League side.

Jesus told Portuguese news service RTP: 'As for Gedson, I don't know him very well because he never worked with me.

'Now, all these young people that Benfica have, if they don't play in these teams, it is better to be at Benfica. In my opinion, they learn much more (if they stay).

'If they don't play for these teams, they might as well be at Benfica. They learn much more. Florentino (Luis) left, he is not playing [in Monaco], Jota is not playing [in Real Valladolid], Tomás Tavares is not playing [Alaves].

'If you are not going to play, it is better to be here.'
