Gerrard closing on his 13th new signing as Rangers boss

Rangers were last night on the brink of signing NK Osijek winger Eros Grezda in a deal worth around £2million.

The 23-year-old Albanian international was in Glasgow on Monday for talks as Steven Gerrard aims to secure his 13th addition since taking charge at Ibrox.

While confirmation of a deal will be subject to a medical and a work permit, Grezda has been identified as a replacement for Jamie Murphy after the Scotland cap was ruled out for the remainder of the season with cruciate ligament damage.

Rangers already have a business relationship with Osijek having signed left-back Borna Barisic in a £1.5m transfer just days after knocking the Croats out of the Europa League.

Grezda didn't play in either leg of that second qualifying round tie due to an injury that has sidelined him since the end of last season, but he is now thought to be close to returning to action.

Capped six times, Grezda joined Osijek from NK Lokomotiva 12 months ago and quickly established himself as a creative force, scoring eight times.

Gerrard is now poised to bring him on board at Ibrox, with a centre-back set to follow before Friday's transfer deadline.

Rangers have explored potential loans for Bournemouth's Jack Simpson and Joe Worrall of Nottingham Forest, while Northern Ireland veteran Gareth McAuley has also been considered.
