Norway claimed a crucial 2-0 victory against Latvia in their World Cup qualifying clash on Saturday.
Erling Haaland put the away side ahead from the spot and Mohamed Elyounoussi doubled their advantage in the second half, the result meaning Norway now sit atop Group G on 10 points, with Latvia remaining in fifth.
It was also an intriguing night of clashes across the whole of Europe between teams hoping to make it to the Qatar tournament in 2022.
In Group A, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice as Serbia beat Luxembourg 4-1 to move level with Portugal atop the group with 10 points, the Fulham striker taking his international record to 43 goals in just 65 appearances.
In Group D, a Joel Pohjanpalo header on the hour helped Finland beat Kazakhstan 1-0 in a tight game in the capital city Helsinki. Finland lie second with five points, with Kazakhstan and Bosnia on two each.
In Group F, Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark continued their perfect start with a 1-0 win against the Faroe Islands thanks to a goal from Jonas Wind, while Israel beat the visiting Austria 5-2 in Haifa.
Denmark lie on 15 points, Israel 10, and Austria seven, while the Faroe Islands and Moldova trail with one point each.
In Group G, Memphis Depay scored a brace as the Netherlands outclassed Montenegro 4-0 in Louis van Gaal's first home game in his third spell as Netherlands' coach to stay second in the group behind Turkey, who beat Gibraltar 3-0.
Norway won thanks in part to Haaland, who took his total to nine goals in 14 games for his national team - a year after his first goal for Norway. Turkey have 11 points, Netherlands and Norway 10, Montenegro seven, Latvia four, and Gibraltar zero.
In Group H, Marcelo Brozovic scored late for Croatia to beat Slovakia 1-0 and remain level on points with Russia atop the group, with Russia ahead on goal difference after beating Cyprus 2-0 with goals from Aleksandr Yerokhin and Rifat Zhemaletdinov.
Also, Slovenia edged Malta with a first-half penalty from Sandi Lovric, meaning Russia and Croatia each have 10 points, Slovenia seven, and Slovakia six, with Malta and Cyprus on four each.
Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes scored for Portugal, who beat 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar 3-1 in a friendly despite missing Cristiano Ronaldo, who has returned to Manchester United.
