Harry Kane shows off new gold boots in England training

The relaxed mood in the England squad was further underlined on Friday morning when players were pictured chucking a Nerf rocket between them as they trained at St George's Park.

Harry Kane, wearing new golden boots to signify his goal-scoring success at the World Cup, threw the toy towards the likes of John Stones and Trent Alexander-Arnold as they put in final preparations for Saturday's match against Spain.

Manager Gareth Southgate looked equally relaxed with his players enjoying a laugh during what is likely to have been a light session the day before their Nations League bow at Wembley.

Along with the Nerf football, which retails at a modest £10 from most good sports shops, Kane's new-look Nike boots would have been the topic of conversation among the England team.

Having won the Golden Boot at this summer's World Cup with six goals, Kane will sport a pair of Nike's Hypervenom III Elite FG boots in the same colour. The boots also have his name and the birthday of his daughter Ivy inscribed on the side.

He will be presented with the official FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in front of a huge crowd at Wembley on Saturday prior to kick off against Spain.

The Nerf football would have undoubtedly kept the players in high spirits ahead of their first game since losing their World Cup third-place play-off against Belgium, but appears to have come close to causing a double injury concern.

Liverpool's Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford appeared to clash in midair after both trying to catch the rocket. They came away unscathed, but fresh injuries are the last thing England need.

Southgate has just 18 outfield players to choose from for the games against Spain on Saturday and Switzerland on Tuesday following the withdrawals of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling and Liverpool's Adam Lallana.

The Three Lions chief opted not to bring in reinforcements and instead called on age group players such as Dominic Solanke, Eddie Nketiah and Marcus Tavernier to bolster numbers in training this week.

He stripped it back to his core senior squad for their final session before heading to Wembley, though, with all 18 players - plus goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Alex McCarthy, Jack Butland and Marcus Bettinelli - put through their paces.

Southgate's side face Spain in their opening UEFA Nations League clash in the capital before taking on the Swiss at Leicester's King Power Stadium in a friendly three days later.
