Harry Kane still two goals short of Jimmy Greaves's Tottenham record

Harry Kane may still have work to do to match Jimmy Greaves's number of goals for Tottenham, with records showing that the latter actually netted 268 times for the club during his illustrious career.

Kane scored his 266th goal for his boyhood club on Monday night in Spurs' 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage, with many believing he had matched the mark set by Greaves.

However, it has since emerged that Greaves's two strikes against Ipswich in the 1962 Charity Shield have not been included in Tottenham's record books.

They have been left on the English National Football Archive database, though, which has Greaves down as scoring 268 goals for the Lilywhites.

There is some dispute as to whether the Charity Shield, now known as the Community Shield, counts as a competitive fixture, but the historical database does suggest that Greaves has been short-changed, and that Kane is not level with him just yet.

Following his goal against Fulham, Kane was hailed by Jamie Carragher as Tottenham's greatest ever player, but it seems that he is not the club's greatest ever goalscorer for the moment.

That accolade looks likely to come later this season, given Kane's goalscoring form so far this term.

He already has 18 goals in all competitions in 2022-23, with only Manchester City's Erling Haaland having scored more in the Premier League.

There has been speculation linking Kane with a potential move to Manchester United in the summer, as he approaches the final year of his Tottenham contract.

Should he decide to move on at the end of the season, he would be limiting the time he has to go past Greaves's mark.

But the 29-year-old has revealed that he is expecting to speak with Spurs about a new deal in the coming months, indicating that he may continue at the club beyond this season, giving himself plenty of time to go past Greaves to set a record that is going to be very difficult to beat in the future.

Kane's next chance to add to his tally comes on Saturday when Spurs travel to Preston in the FA Cup, and he will then get the opportunity to score his 200th Premier League goal the following weekend as Antonio Conte's men host Manchester City.
