Harry Maguire makes Man Utd transfer decision as Erik ten Hag stance emerges

Harry Maguire wants to stay and fight for his future at Manchester United, it has been claimed.

The England defender, 31, was seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford last year after being stripped of the club captaincy by Erik ten Hag following a string of poor performances during the 2022/23 campaign.

After impressing Ten Hag with his attitude last term, Maguire eventually forced his way back into the Dutchman's team - and The Daily Star have now revealed that the former Leicester man has no plans to seek a move this summer.

Maguire is fit and back for pre-season after missing out on Euro 2024. He worked on his recovery throughout the summer, even taking a member of United's medical team with him on holiday to Portugal, and is set to start in Sunday's pre-season friendly against Rosenborg.

Prior to being recalled by Ten Hag last season amid a significant injury crisis, Maguire was expected to be sold this summer with the centre-half now inside the final year of his contract.

But the report goes on to outline that Ten Hag is happy to retain Maguire's services rather than selling him on the cheap during the summer transfer window.

While Ten Hag and Maguire are both happy for the defender to stay at Old Trafford, United will press ahead with plans to sign a new centre-back in the coming days.

The Red Devils have already seen two bids rejected by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite, while Matthijs de Ligt - who worked with Ten Hag previously at Ajax - is also a target.

Talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for De Ligt, 24, have been ongoing for several days and recent reports have indicated that progress is being made.

Mirror Football outlined last week that De Ligt is already sold on the idea of reuniting with Ten Hag in the Premier League. The United manager has even held talks with De Ligt, who joined Bayern Munich from Juventus back in the summer of 2022.

United are also close to wrapping up a deal for De Ligt's Netherlands team-mate Joshua Zirkzee. The Bologna striker underwent a medical at the weekend and will compete with Rasmus Hojlund for a place up front.
