Hearts' derby descends into chaos, flares & a COCONUT are thrown on pitch

Saturday lunchtime's Edinburgh derby between Hearts and Hibernian was marred as a number of items, including a coconut, were thrown on to the pitch.

The two Scottish Premiership clubs hold a strong rivalry and meetings at both Tynecastle and Easter Road are never short of controversy on and off the pitch.

Kick-off was delayed for a number of minutes as referee Willie Collum was forced to deal with a smoke bomb that had been thrown on the Tynecastle pitch.

There was a fever-pitch atmosphere inside a packed-out stadium and minutes into the contest Hearts' fans again launched a maroon flare onto the field of player, leaving players fighting through a cloud of smoke.

Hearts started stronger and took the lead through Peter Haring. But they were soon to be pegged back through Daryl Horgan and that was when the Hibs fans showed they too had flares to through.

The green flare was quickly followed by an item more at home at a funfair rather than a football stadium as a coconut was launched by a supporter.

Fans of both sides were scrutinised and checked before entering the stadium and questions will be asked of the match security as to how so many prohibited items entered the terraces.

Viewers of the televised game initially thought their eyes were simply deceiving them before replays showed one plucky fan had somehow smuggled a coconut inside the ground.

There was a visible police presence monitoring both sets of supporters which made the number of missiles thrown a cause for concern.

The players were unharmed by the launching of the tropical fruit and it was Hibernian who seemed to handle the occasion better as Horgan added a sweet second goal on his left foot to make it 2-1 midway through the second half.
