Wayne Hennessey has denied accusations that he was performing the 'Nazi salute' during a picture while he was out for a meal with his Crystal Palace team-mates on Saturday evening.

The 31-year-old was pictured on Max Meyer's Instagram story  appearing to mimic the highly offensive  gesture at the far end of the table while the Eagles squad celebrated their win over Grimsby in the FA Cup.

On Sunday evening, Hennessey took to Twitter to explain that he 'waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it' and used his hand to cover his mouth so the 'sound would carry'.

The Wales international wrote: 'Yesterday evening I had a meal with my team-mates and we had a grouph photograph. I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry.

'It’s been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.

'I can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental. Love and peace Wayne.'

The Mirror said the goalkeeper was set to face serious questions from his employers after the photo caught the attention of fans on Twitter.

While the picture was posted on Saturday night, it has since been deleted with photos on Instagram stories set to expire after 24 hours.

Hennessey recently lost his place in the Eagles' starting XI to Vicente Guaita but managed to feature for the full 90 minutes in the FA Cup win over the Mariners.

Jordan Ayew scored the winning goal four minutes from time as Grimsby almost held on for a replay despite being down to 10 men from the second minute after Andrew Fox saw red.

Palace have won their last three games in the Premier League are six points clear of the relegation places.
