Barcelona supporters might see the clash against Liverpool as one to look forward to. However history doesn't favour the Spanish champions, although Leo Messi is a nice wildcard to have in your pack to buck that record.
The two teams have met on three occasions in a European knockout tie: twice in the UEFA Cup and once in the Champions League. Interesting in all three of those matches the first leg was played in Barcelona and the return leg in Anfield. Liverpool won every tie. In 2001/02 Liverpool and Barça met each other but it was in the Group Stages.
In the 1975/76 season, Barça lost 1-0 at the Camp Nou thanks to a strike by Toshack. They drew in England but were knocked out on aggregate.
Then, in the 2000/01 season, Barça were knocked out after drawing 0-0 at the Camp Nou and then losing 1-0 at Anfield.
The most recent clash between the two was when Rafa Benitez's Liverpool knocked out Rijkaard's Barça in the last 16 stage. Bellamy and Riise cancelled out Deco's opener and Gudjohnson's sole strike wasn't enough to push Barça through.
Barça have yet to eliminate Liverpool in a two-legged match but they have won twice at Anfield. They did so in 2007 as well as the 2001/02 season, when they won 3-1 in the group stages.
History shows that Barça fair better against Liverpool at Anfield rather than the Camp Nou. At home, Barça have never beaten the English side at home: two draws and two defeats.
