How Man City should line up vs FC Copenhagen in the Champions League

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will have to decide whether to rotate his squad or continue to go strong in their third Champions League group game of the season vs FC Copenhagen.

City have six points from six in the group, and can put one foot in the last-16 with victory at the Etihad on Wednesday. However, Guardiola has a few injury concerns and may want to give some more important players a rest ahead of a busy schedule in the next month.

John Stones and Kalvin Phillips are out, with Kyle Walker likely to join them. Rodri was being assessed on Tuesday after missing the derby win over Manchester United, but trained in the afternoon so could feature. Others, like Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Gomez, Aymeric Laporte and Julian Alvarez may hope to get a game after finding themselves out of contention recently.

At some point Haaland won't start a game but while he is making such an impact in such a short amount of time he may as well continue with the form he is in. Julian Alvarez deserves a start though to continue his integration into the team and give Kevin De Bruyne a rest to keep him primed for the Premier League.

Kyle Walker's absence means that Joao Cancelo is almost destined to start at right-back, and Sergio Gomez impressed when he came off the bench against United on Sunday. Nathan Ake can stay in the team with Ruben Dias coming back in.

Rodri's fitness isn't worth risking, particularly with Ilkay Gundogan a sound option in the holding role. Riyad Mahrez desperately needs some minutes and some form.

There's an argument to rest Erling Haaland, but with qualification not yet secured, I can't see Guardiola leaving him out just yet. There's room for rotation elsewhere, though, especially with Kyle Walker and Rodri doubtful.

If Rodri has only just returned to training, that means the midfield may have to remain the same as in the derby, but the defence can change with Aymeric Laporte coming back along with Ruben Dias - dropped for the derby. Sergio Gomez deserve a chance to play after doing well off the bench on Sunday.

In attack, Riyad Mahrez should get a chance to react to Guardiola's challenge to him, with Phil Foden impossible to drop after a hat-trick.

There could be the temptation to rest some players but with knock-out stage qualification at stake and Southampton hardly the toughest match at the weekend, I would name as strong a team as possible against Copenhagen to ensure the job gets done.

Kyle Walker's injury means one change will be enforced and I would bring Ruben Dias back into the fold for the match in his place. Neither Manuel Akanji nor Nathan Ake deserves to be dropped after their displays in the derby so I would put the latter at left-back with Joao Cancelo on the right.

Injuries to Kalvin Phillips and Rodri mean there is little room for change in midfield but nor should there be. I would also keep the fearful front three of Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish in tact as they continue to develop their understanding.
