How should Liverpool line up for Champions League clash vs Barcelona?

  /  Will_Lee_15

Liverpool will face the presiding Spanish champions, crowned for the 26th time last week, in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp has a near-full strength side to choose from to combat the threat the Blaugrana pose, with some key players being reintroduced into the travelling squad.

Here is how the Reds could line up in Barcelona.

Defence

Although Joe Gomez has recovered well from his injury and is fit enough to travel with the squad, it may be too soon for a starting berth – especially with the capable talents that the Catalans count among their ranks.

As a result, Joel Matip will likely start at centre-back, with Gomez ready to play a role from the bench if needed as he has done recently.

The rest of the defensive line picks itself – he will be joined by Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while first choice netminder Alisson Becker will start in goal.

Starting players: Alisson; Alexander Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson

Midfield

Fabinho missed Liverpool’s win over the Terriers on Friday after suffering a knock to the head in the 2-0 victory against Cardiff. When asked about the Brazilian, Klopp said: “He was not available. Every human being needs time and he needed that time, but it was already three or four days ago. If the Huddersfield game would have been a day later he could have played, but it was just impossible for that game. But it’s OK.”

Meanwhile, the Reds manager has a big decision to make in midfield with Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum all in contention.

Starting players: Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson

Attack

The only doubt among Liverpool’s preferred starting front three is Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian missed the Premier League match against Huddersfield with a muscular issue. However, he is expected to recover to feature in the midweek game, having trained with the squad.

He will be joined by first choice wide forwards, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Starting players: Salah, Firmino, Mane
