Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe expressed his delight after Sven Botman extended his contract with the club.

The 26-year-old has signed a new deal which will see him stay at St. James Park until the summer of 2030.

Botman has made 93 appearances for the Magpies, with 17 of those coming this season, since joining from Lille ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

In the Premier League, Botman has directly contributed five goals (two goals, three assists) in 72 matches, while winning 63.5% of his duels and 64.5% of his tackles.

Botman also made two appearances in their victorious EFL Cup run last season, though he missed the final against Liverpool with a knee injury.

Howe told the club website: “We’re delighted that Sven has committed his long-term future to the club.

“He has been an outstanding player for us since he joined and I firmly believe there’s more to come from him.

“Sven has a strong mentality and work ethic, which is clear every time he trains or plays. We value his presence on and off the pitch and l’m really pleased to see his long-term future secured here.”

And Botman added: “I’m really happy to sign this contract. This club has given me so much in the last three-and-a-half years.

“I’ve grown as a person and as a player here and I feel like I have so much more to give in the long term. That’s why both parties are really happy with this decision and I’m looking forward to what’s coming in the future here.”

Botman will be hoping to mark his new deal with a strong performance in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Newcastle have won each of their last nine matches in the competition. Excluding shootout victories, only Liverpool (11 between 1994-1995) and Arsenal (10 between 1987-1988) have won more consecutively.
