Hull City restore name to club badge to be used from 2019-20

Hull City completed a U-turn on Tuesday when they reintroduced their name to a newly-designed club crest.

Five years ago, Hull chairman Assem Allam dropped it from the official badge during a spell in which he pushed to rebrand the club to Hull Tigers.

Allam claimed that City was common and that the Yorkshire club would be more marketable globally if known formally by their nickname of the Tigers.

However, the Football Association blocked the change amidst protest from the club’s supporters groups.

Fan demonstrations over the way the owners have run the club have been a feature of subsequent years - including the throwing of stress balls onto the field to hold up matches.

Last March, a month after one such stoppage against Sheffield United, the word City was returned to the club’s social media platforms.

Soon afterwards, supporters were invited to be a part of the consultation for the new crest - which retains the same tiger’s head first used 40 years ago.

The Allam family have been trying to sell the promotion-chasing Championship club for around £50million throughout the period but are yet to conclude a deal.

The Championship club's new badge, based on the classic tiger's head first introduced in the 1970s, will be in use for the 2019-20 season.

Former Hull striker and current academy coach Craig Fagan was on the creative panel.

He added: 'As players you look at the crest and you wear it with pride and I think this new one is one we're all pleased with.'
