Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt has hinted that a future move to Liverpool may be on the cards.

The 19-year-old has been a regular starter for the Amsterdam giants since the start of last season, with his excellent performances earning the captain's armband and links with Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

But Anfield may also be a possible destination for the teen star who has partnered Liverpool rock Virgil van Dijk in defence multiple times for Holland.De Ligt told Omnisport: 'Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues. Of course you want to learn from him.

'It's very helpful to play next to him in the Dutch team.'

Asked if he might join Van Dijk at Anfield, he added: 'It could happen. He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I'm not focused on them.

'I focus on Ajax, and then I will see where I will end up.'

Ajax have not won a trophy since 2014 but they are well positioned to break their duck this season.

They are in the final of the Dutch Cup against Willem II and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after knocking out holders Real Madrid.

Ajax are currently second in the Eredivisie table, eight points behind PSV, but they have two games in hand on the leaders.
