Jose Mourinho will receive a warm welcome from at least one person at Old Trafford next week - with Michael Carrick grateful the Special One gave him the chance of a new career.
Mourinho is likely to face a mixed reception when he leads Spurs against the club that sacked him 11 months ago.
Carrick was coaching at the club during Mourinho's toxic final few months but says he'll always appreciate being given the chance to learn from one of Europe's top managers after he retired from playing in the summer of 2018.
'I have got a lot to thank him (Mourinho) for. He knows that,' says Carrick.. 'He gave me an opportunity with the coaching, the next chapter if you like. I will always be grateful for that. It wasn't something he had to do, it was his choice.
'For what he has achieved, there is no way I couldn't learn from him. It was my first time coaching as well so it was all new to me. To have him there and guide me as he did then, obviously I am all the better for that.'
Carrick won five Premier League titles and the Champions League as a United player and says he always felt confident to give Mourinho his point of view, as he does now with Solskjaer. 'That is your role. There is no point shying away from it,' he says.
'It is going to be a big game on Wednesday. I really look forward to it. It was a strange game between us last season. We played some good stuff but they have real talent (Spurs won 3-0).'
The spotlight will be on how Mourinho plays the PR game heading back to Old Trafford. He won two trophies in his two-year spell at the club but was sacked with the team a long way from challenging Liverpool and Manchester City and bogged down by a row with star player Paul Pogba.
'I can't speak for Jose. I can only thank him for what he's done for me,' says Carrick. 't is kind of hypothetical. Ole is a terrific manager. He is all about his belief in the club and anything outside that, it doesn't effect Ole or where our focus is.
'I am not going to compare him to another manager or what he will do if something is said or not said, there is no need for that.'
