Danny Ings might be having one of his best seasons in front of goal, but it was his bizarre defending which was the centre of arguably the strangest goal of the season.
The 27-year-old, who is enjoying a prolific season for Southampton, was tasked with marking the near post at a defensive corner just two minutes into the match with his former side Burnley.
Inexplicably the striker for some reason decided to leave the ball as Ashley Westwood's corner flew past him and curled straight into the net.
It was a shocking mistake for Ings to make as he actively jumped out of the way of the ball, presumably expecting his goalkeeper to make the catch.
The goal was made slightly more embarrassing by the fact it came against his former side where he scored 38 goals in 122 games between 2011 and 2015.
Unsurprisingly, the striker has since been mocked on social media for the bizarre error.
Ciaran Mitchell tweeted: 'Does Danny Ings know he doesn’t play for Burnley anymore?!'
Several fans criticised Ings for his lack of defending with Tottenham Hotspurs supporter Devin Kutner tweeting: 'Congrats to Danny Ings for doing 100% of everything you could do wrong defending a near post corner.'
Anthony Jimenez added: 'That's the worst defending I've ever seen from a set piece.'
While Nadir Hassan finally tweeted: 'Well left outside the off stump from Danny Ings.'
Ings was able to redeem himself just 16 minutes after letting the first goal in, when he won the ball on the edge of the box and drilled a low effort beyond Nick Pope to score his 15th league goal of the season.
However, the striker's goal was cancelled out by a stunning second-half strike from Matej Vydra, which won the game for Burnley.
