England's match against Iran faced an early delay after a brutal clash of heads between goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and defender Majid Hosseini.
In the eighth minute of the game, the two Iranian players came to blows when trying to defend a Harry Kane cross, and lengthy checks resulted in a delay of 10 minutes.
Bizarrely, both players continued, before Beiranvand collapsed again and had to be substituted in the 18th minute. Play had resumed for around 30 seconds before he had to come off.
Beiranvand came running out of his goal to try and claim the cross, but got nowhere near the ball and ended up clattering into Hosseini, who was also running backwards.
Both player had eyes for the ball, which resulted in the collision and eventual substitution.
Jermaine Jenas, on commentary for the game, slammed the medical staff for allowing the goalkeeper to continue.
He said: 'It's out of order, it's the responsibility of the medical team to make the right decision and get him off. He shouldn't even be on the pitch now.
'I think it's a joke, I really do. It's really unacceptable, we've said our piece on it but it really is. It doesn't matter that he signalled to Carlos Quieroz. And it's not sending a nice message to the goalkeeper coming in with his hands on his head like that.
His last involvement was to save his team a goal so it was a huge involvement - you can see why Carlos would be disappointed but it was the right call. And it was the right call ten minutes ago.'
