Kylian Mbappé (25) will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract having won almost everything there was to win in his seven years at the club. And yet, perhaps the most important title, the one desperately idolised in the annals of the French capital, remained out of reach.
The Frenchman had come close to leading PSG to European glory; a narrow defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final was followed by a semi-final loss to Manchester City the following year. This season it appeared as if it would be the best chance for Mbappé to finally secure the trophy but they fell once more at the semi-final hurdle.
A 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park was followed by the same scoreline at the Parc des Princes. Each of these results for Mbappé have simply been part of his pathway in football as he stated in an interview with CNN.
“I think it’s part of the journey. I have, of course, many [more] opportunities to win the Champions League, but I think it’s part of your destiny,” the Frenchman explained. “We were close a few times… Now, I’m in the position that I only want to have good feelings, good memories about my journey in Paris and everything that happened in this club and don’t forget about the small details.”
