Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed that watching Wayne Rooney's stunning overhead kick against rivals Manchester City in 2011 is something he will "never forget".
McTominay played the full 90 minutes during United's 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Burnley last week, as Erik ten Hag named the Scot in the starting XI for his side's first competitive match since the World Cup break. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane's post-final absence saw Casemiro drop into centre-back alongside Victor Lindelof - leaving a space for the 26-year-old to line up alongside Christian Eriksen.
The focus has now shifted back to the Premier League for the first time in more than a month as United prepare to welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford. McTominay will be hopeful of starting under Ten Hag in successive matches, with the academy graduate looking to get his chance to add to the long list of magical moments at the Theatre of Dreams.
Old Trafford has seen countless iconic goals scored over the years, but McTominay has now revealed that Rooney's stunning bicycle kick against City more than a decade ago was a strike that will never leave him.
He told club media: “I was at Sir Alex [Ferguson's] last game. I was in the crowd, with all the red banners held up and stuff like that, which was an amazing atmosphere. But I would probably say Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick was something that I’ll never forget.
“I was sat with the now first-team kitman Ian Buckingham and it was just crazy. I’ll never forget that. It was special.”
