Jermaine Jenas insisted that the controversial set piece that brought Marseille's first half opener against Tottenham was '100 per cent' a corner, after Spurs seemed in disbelief at the referee's decision.
The former Spurs midfielder however was adamant that it was the correct call, after the ball came off Yves Bissouma's boot on its way off the pitch, with the French side netting from the resulting kick.
Ex-Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba rose highest from the corner to head the home side in front in added time in the first half, with Ryan Sessegnon particularly bemused at the call.
'I know it's a corner - 100 per cent,' claimed Jenas as part of BT Sport's coverage of the Champions League tie. 'You can clearly see it comes off Bissouma's foot, just there.
'There's a little touch on it and the referee's probably close enough to have heard that nick and they need to switch on that's the problem.
'The decision's been given and there's too many players walking, the decision's been made and we can see it comes off Bissouma's boot.'
Marseille took the kick quickly, but Spurs' defenders were notable for having their backs to the ball, switching off at a key point in the game with the hosts dominant.
And with that, Mbemba was afforded far too much space in the box and was gifted a free header at the back post to give Tottenham a mountain to climb in the second half.
The goal came at the end of a half in which the home team were completely superior to the visitors, who struggled to get on the ball and lost star man Son Heung-min early on due to a head injury.
Rio Ferdinand also criticised the Spurs defenders for losing concentration at a key moment in the game, and insisted they needed to 'get back' in position quicker.
'It's all worrying about where people are on the pitch. Get your man, get back in your slot as soon as you can.
'The amount of space Mbemba has there to actually get up - it's a fantastic header.'
