Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's return to Burton Albion has got off to the worst possible start after his side conceded five goals in the first hour of their League One clash with Oxford United.

Burton, who are rock bottom of League One, appointed Hasselbaink on Friday after sacking Jake Buxton following a run of four straight defeats.

But the start of Hasselbaink's second stint at the Pirelli stadium has not gone to plan. Burton were 3-0 down after half an hour before Kane Hemmings pulled a goal back for the home side just before half-time.

Matty Taylor opened the scoring for Oxford in the ninth minute before two goals from Olamide Shodipo in the 18th and 31st minute made it 3-0 to the visitors.

Josh Ruffles added two more goals in the second half to make it 5-1 to Karl Robinson's team

Hasselbaink was manager of Burton between 2014 and 2015, guiding the club to promotion from League Two in his first season in charge.

The Brewers were top of League One when Hasselbaink left for Queens Park Rangers in December 2015.

Speaking about returning to the League One side, Hasselbaink told Burton's website: 'Burton Albion is a club which is very close to my heart and a really special club for me and my family,' Hasselbaink told the club's official website.

'The job is totally different from the first time, but we are coming in to try as quickly as possible to get us up the league and keep ourselves in League One - that's our aim and first and foremost that's what we will be trying to do.

'We know there is enough quality in the playing squad but that's not reflected in where we are in the table so there is a lot of hard work to be done.

'I have wonderful memories from when I was here before and it was a very important time in my life and I have always kept in touch with the club but I know it's a different job now.'
